RSS man plotted attack on co-worker

NAGPUR: In a rare occurrence in the tightly knit organization that prides itself on discipline, an RSS man plotted the assault on a co-worker and that resulted in serious injuries. Police said that rivalry between the two was the main reason for the incident that had put immense pressure on them for the case to be quickly solved.

Ganesh Shripatre, a Sangh parivar member for more than 20 years, was arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the incident on RSS city in-charge Mohan Agnihotri on May 30. Police has also arrested Shripatre's
accomplice Anand Tambe who has two murder charges against his name.

Senior police officials said Shripatre paid Rs 4,000 to Tambe to merely intimidate Agnihotri. Tambe roped in two youths, including Kunal Kamble, who too has criminal cases against him, for the purpose. The attackers apparently got carried away and assaulted Agnihotri with knives on Nandanvan canal road. The police is yet to nab Kamble and his aide.

On the day of attack, Shripatre remained at home while Tambe was near the attack spot. It was reliably leant that Shripatre had contacted a burglar a year back to eliminate Agnihotri but the plan did not take off.

RSS spokesperson was not available for comments on the incident.

Police said that Shripatre wanted to rise in the organization hierarchy but his dream was not taking wings. Agnihotri was made the city chief of RSS during Gudi Padwa this year. This had upset Shripatre. He was apparently preparing to contest the forthcoming civic election on a BJP ticket. Shripatre was apprehensive that Agnihotri could put a spoke in his plans.

"Shripatre and Agnihotri worked in different branches of the same cooperative bank. While Agnihotri was a clerk, Shripatre was a peon. Shripatre would often expect Agnihotri to help him with loans and other favours but nothing materialized," said deputy commissioner of police Nishith Mishra.

Shripatre and Tambe too were known to each other quite well. In May, Shripatre had helped Tambe to move into an adjacent rented place to his Shree Krishna Nagar house. "Shripatre had relations with several top goons in city and would invite criminals to at his place often," said a crime branch official.

Shripatre had contested the last city civic election in 2007 on a BJP ticket but had lost to Moreshwar 'Mama' Dhote of the h by 420 votes. He was looking after the RSS' Shreekrishna Nagar branch.

The incident had left the city police under pressure. The threat of communal tension was looming large too as RSS claimed that Agnihotri, who has been discharged after treatment in a private hospital, was in the outfit's uniform when attacked. Police, however, found him in a black short and blue jersey. Warning a stir, a delegation had met the commissioner of police Ankush Dhanvijay and submitted a memorandum.

The CP, who had dubbed the case as the second biggest challenge after the Monica Kirnapure investigation, said it was team work that helped us solve the case.
